Obituary of Mary E. Atwood
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary (Marie) Atwood (nee Mulvihill).
Marie died peacefully at her home at the age of 64 on May 1, 2025. She was fiercely loved and will be deeply missed.
Marie was born in Brooklyn, New York to Peter and Regina Mulvihill (nee Reilly). She grew up in Mill Basin, where she met her high school sweetheart and future husband of 44 years, John Atwood. After marriage, Marie moved around the world with her family, supporting her husband’s Naval career. She then settled in Boonton in 1991 and dedicated herself to raising her three daughters. She loved being a mom. She enjoyed cheering her girls on at school events, rescuing shelter dogs, planning family vacations to the Jersey Shore and dancing to 70s pop music.
But making beautiful things for the people she cared about was her love language and Marie was never happier than when she was creating, crafting, sewing or decorating.
Predeceased by her parents and three brothers, Marie leaves behind her husband, John, her daughters Kimberly Ann Hughes, Erin Marie Atwood and Catherine Theresa Atwood, a son-in-law, William Hughes, and two beloved grandchildren, Imogen Grace and Dylan Rhys Hughes.
Please join her family for visitation on Saturday, May 3rd at Dangler Funeral Home in Boonton, NJ from 1:00 to 3:00pm and 5:00 to 7:00pm and on Sunday, May 4th at Marine Park Funeral Home in Brooklyn, NY from 2:00 to 5:00pm and 7:00 to 9:00pm. Internment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn on Monday, May 5th.
