Obituary of Evelyne Veix

Please share a memory of Evelyne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Evelyne Veix (nee St. Cyrus) was born on November 19, 1951 to loving parents Lamercie Decayette and Julien St. Cyrus. She was born in a perfect pair with her cherished twin brother, Dr. Evens St Cyrus. The twins were welcomed into a growing family where they were doted on by siblings Viviane, Micheline, Mercia and later, younger sister Melaide. Evelyne, her siblings and adored cousins grew up in a tight knit household with education-focused values. Their childhood was still filled with laughter, and the constant presence of caring aunts and a strong grandmother instilled in Evelyne the importance of family bonds. Like her siblings before her, Evelyne emigrated to the U.S. in 1970 where she graduated high school in Brooklyn.

Kind-hearted, shy, reserved and gentle, Evelyne was fiercely protective of her family—especially of Evens, whom she remained deeply bonded with throughout life. As a working adult, Evelyne formed her singular identity, shining in her expression of new-found independence. She valued being independent and industrious. The sight of Evelyne dressed impeccably on her way to work is imprinted on her nieces’ and nephews’ minds—proud and elegant, her tiny feet balancing on heels, striding down the sidewalk to the city subway. Her strides carried a rhythm reminiscent of the kompa and disco music she enjoyed so much. And in her sweet romance and marriage to Wilner Veix, Evelyne found a friendship that endured her whole life.

Evelyne worked several jobs until the early 1990s when she switched to her most lasting and family-treasured role, caregiver. With her soft heart and joyful spirit, Evelyne became one of the designated family caregivers. From her nieces and nephews to great-nieces and nephews, Evelyne provided love, care, encouragement, kindness and safety to generations of children and their parents, enjoying a special bond with her treasured great niece Sofia Coronel. She was also a second mother to all of her nieces and nephews, supporting all of their endeavors as they navigated life as second-and third-generation Americans. She never asked for anything and gave everything.

Evelyne also proudly became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. and deepened her interest in politics and news. She was an avid reader and learner of all things perplexing like true crime, history, crosswords, tv program “Family Feud” and “The Honeymooners.” In  her enjoyment of TV shows and their characters, she found a world that matched her own reflective inner mind, as a keen witness to universal human life cycles unfolding in stories. Though Evelyne had a strong, rumbling voice, her true sacred voice was her dancing. Evelyne’s artistry was expressed in her gift of dance. Her dancing inspired the careers and hobbies of several nieces. She once wisely told them, Large moments to upbeat rhythms can be mistaken for mastery, but a true dancer can slow dance. Evelyne demonstrated this wisdom in the way she lived her exemplary quiet life, one small but masterful movement at a time. She will always be loved and missed dearly. She is predeceased by her parents Lamercie and Julien, and sister Viviane. She is survived by Evelyne’s siblings, Micheline Napoleon (Fritzner), Mercia St. Cyrus, Dr. Evens St. Cyrus (Nancy), Melaide Joseph, Varda St. Cyrus (Chandler), Richard St. Cyrus, nieces and nephews Marie Coronel, Esq. (Paul), Michel P. Napoleon (Marisol), Jackie Granchamps (Marc), Grace L. Munoz (Carlos), Keney Napoleon and great-nieces and nephews whom she loves dearly including the Coronels, Munozes, Echols, Volcys, Asirifis, Rigauds, Nicaisses, Josephs, St. Cyrus, Downs, Whytes, Torres, Napoleons and many more.
