Obituary of John Thomas McCann

John (Jack) McCann son of the late Thomas and Ernestine McCann and brother of the late Thomas and Robert McCann, passed on to his eternal reward on Monday, October 6, 2025.  He had just celebrated his 92nd birthday on September 25th.

A licensed Professional Engineer in both New York and New Jersey, he was also a New Jersey licensed Professional Land Surveyor, Planner, Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator, Collector and a certified Public Works Manager, and held numerous other certifications.  Mr. McCann was a sole practitioner for the past many years.

He served as the City Engineer of Summit, Director of Public Works and Township Engineer of West Orange, Borough Engineer of New Providence, and was a former Public Health Engineer for the State of New Jersey.

He was a graduate of Newark College of Engineering and Seton Hall University’s master’s program in Business Administration.

Mr. McCann was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and a past commander of VFW Post 190 in Summit/New Providence.  He was a member and past president of the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors and the NJ Society of Municipal Engineers.  He was also a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, Garden State Professional Land Surveyors Association, New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Public Works Association and the New Jersey Water Environment Association.

Born in Orange, he lived his entire life in West Orange while spending summers in Manasquan. 

Surviving is the great love of his life Patsy (Kelly) McCann, his wife of 66 years.  Five children John, Karen, Maureen Garafola (Larry), KellyAnn Ehrich (Stephen), Eileen Steidle (Ken), and fourteen grandchildren Brian, Kelsey, Larry, Jacquelyn, Sean, Matthew, Stephen, Lauren, Jack, Kevin, Griffin, Sophie, Brady and Ean and three great grandchildren Wade, Finleigh and Luca.
