Ines Joana Sousa

May 20, 1934 – January 30, 2026

Ines Joana Sousa, known to friends and family as “Nizinha”, and simply as “Mae”  (Mother) to her children and grandchildren,  passed away the evening of Friday January 30th, 2026.  She was surrounded by her loved ones at the time of her passing. Ines was born on May 20th, 1934, to father Antonio Manuel Da Cruz and mother Joana Baptista Sousa in the Cape Verde Islands, where she lived and single-handedly worked to raise five children. In 1980,  at the petition of her late brother John Da Cruz, she emigrated to the United States.  Upon arriving in the U.S., she worked tirelessly until she could fully reunite her family. 

Ines was admired by all who knew her and respected for her impeccable character. She was adored by the numerous friends, cousins, nieces, nephews, and godchildren around the world who regularly kept in touch with her throughout her nearly 92 years.
As the matriarch of her family, she was a devoted mother and grandmother who made tremendous sacrifices to provide her family with the best life that she could. She is survived by her three daughters, Maria Da Luz, Maria Alina, and Joana, her two sons, Antonio and Ilougino, and 32 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom deeply loved her.  She will be sorely missed.

 Ines Joana Sousa, conhecida por amigos e família como "Nizinha", e simplesmente como "Mae" (Mãe) pelos filhos e netos, faleceu na noite de sexta-feira, 30 de janeiro de 2026. Estava rodeada pelos seus entes queridos na altura do seu falecimento. Inés nasceu a 20 de maio de 1934, filha de Antonio Manuel Da Cruz e Joana Baptista Sousa, nas Ilhas de Cabo Verde, onde viveu e trabalhou sozinha para criar cinco filhos. Em 1980, a pedido do seu falecido irmão John Da Cruz, emigrou para os Estados Unidos. À chegada aos US, trabalhou incansavelmente até conseguir reunir plenamente a sua família.

Inês era admirada por todos os que a conheciam e respeitada pelo seu carácter impecável. Era adorada pelos inúmeros amigos, primos, sobrinhas, sobrinhos e afilhados de todo o mundo que mantiveram contacto regular com ela ao longo dos seus quase 92 anos.

Como matriarca da sua família, foi uma mãe e avó dedicada que fez enormes sacrifícios para proporcionar à sua família a melhor vida possível. Embora ainda pudesse, não gostava de nada mais do que cuidar dos que a rodeavam; Sempre pronta a saltar e preparar uma refeição e café para quem entrasse pela sua porta. Inés deixa as suas três filhas Maria Da Luz, Maria Alina e Joana, os seus dois filhos Antônio e Ilougino, e 32 netos e bisnetos, todos profundamente amados por ela. Fará muita falta.
