Obituary of Joan Catherine Prout
Joan M. Prout, 90
It is with deep love and remembrance that we announce the passing of Joan M. Prout, who passed away on April 11, 2026, at Mountainside Hospital at the age of 90—the very place where she devoted her career as a Registered Nurse and where she met her first husband.
Born in East Orange, New Jersey, she was the daughter of a dedicated florist and spent her childhood in East Hanover, New Jersey. She made history as a member of the very first graduating nursing class at Seton Hall University, earning her BSN and MSN, and later her RN—an accomplishment that reflected both her intelligence and her deep commitment to caring for others.
She devoted her professional life to nursing, serving as a Registered Nurse at Mountainside Hospital, where she was known for her skill, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her patients. Beyond her career, she generously volunteered with the Red Cross, teaching CPR and empowering others with lifesaving knowledge. She also taught CPR to the local Boy Scouts, Troop #19.
Joan’s life was marked by both deep love and profound loss. She was predeceased by her first husband, Dr. Robert H. Muller and second husband, Frank Prout, as well as her beloved first son, Robert H. Muller, Jr. Despite these hardships, she remained strong and graceful.
She is survived by her loving second son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Karen, and by her first son’s wife, Juliann, all of whom will carry forward her legacy of strength, compassion, and care for others.
Joan found great joy in her country home in Middleville, New Jersey, where she cherished the peace and beauty of nature. She will also be fondly remembered for her famous Linzer torte, a cherished tradition that brought family together each Christmas season.
Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of Joan’s life at Dangler Funeral Home in West Orange, New Jersey. Visiting hours and a small service will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center to support community health programs through the Hackensack Meridian Health Foundation.
Joan’s life was one of service, resilience, and love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those whose lives she touched.
