John and I worked together at the bank. I was on the Mellon side when BNY merged with us. I was a newer manager at the time and John was like a big brother. He was so kind and supportive and so fun to work with. I remember often calling him for advice or guidance and he would say 'hey kid' when he answered the phone. I think maybe we got along so well because I told him my maiden name was O'Leary. He loved his Irish roots and always enjoyed telling stories about his boys. He was a great leader and mentor, but an even better colleague and friend. He will be missed and never forgotten. I'm sending my sincere thoughts and prayers to John's family.
John- may the wind be always at your back. may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Lisa Greer-
To the Madden family,
I was so sorry to hear about John’s passing. I’ve been reflecting on the time we spent working together at Bny, and it’s difficult to express just how much he meant to me as both a boss and a friend. John always knew how to make those around him feel valued, and I’ll always cherish the memories we shared—whether it was tackling challenges together or enjoying a good laugh. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.

Madden we are heartbroken. I had the pleasure of working with you for over 20 years at BNY. I’ll never forget the Pleasantville days after 9/11 or when your team was moving to Woodland Park, you took me along with you saying “you’ll always have a seat on my team kid”. Those were some of the best days -Verona team lunches.! You were a loyal friend and colleague and will be forever missed. May your family find comfort in knowing you are always watching over them.
Rest in peace my friend -Danielle, Andy and the boys

I met John many years ago at BNYM, first as colleagues, then he was a client, but most importantly we were friends. While we did not see each other often, we kept in touch regularly. I would get the TGIF text from John and then we'd go back and forth with banter. He had a great heart, the best sense of humor and an ability to make me laugh about anything. We worked together during some stressful times, but always found something to joke about and lighten the mood. He checked in on me often, asked about my family and always cared. He would provide updates on his family, always proud of his boys and their accomplishments. My fondest memories of John will be having a burger and Bud at O'Hara's and bar pie and Bud at Leos. Those bar pies will never taste quite the same without you my friend. You leave behind a lot of people that love and cared for you. Until we meet again, you memory will stay alive with us and you've left us with countless stories. Rest easy Maddie, your friend always, Fabs!

John and I worked together at BNY for a memoralbe and impactful part of my career. John treated his teams like friends and family when you earned his trust. I remember he would say if I hired you it's because I wouldn't mind sitting across from you during Thanksgiving dinner. During bring your kids to work days he literally played catch with my son in the hallway of the office and he kept in touch with me to keep tabs on how my kids were doing. Rest in heavenly peace John.

John Madden was a former colleague, someone I trusted and considered my friend. He welcomed me to New York on my first business trip a long time ago and while we had not seen each other for a number of years we stayed in touch, most recently remembering the victims on the anniversary of 9/11. John never forgot them or his friends. I am privileged to have known John, to have learned from him and I am a better person for that. I have no doubt many feel that same way, with their own stories and that says so much about John. My sincere condolences to his wife, children, family and friends. May he rest in peace. He will not be forgotten.

I met John when he was at BNY & I was at JPM. He worked closely with Brendan to successfully price our fund vehicles. He was smart, worked hard & was a great team player. I’m sure they stretched some barriers to make it work, but it worked. We are very sorry for your loss. John was a good man & proud native of Jersey City.

As we say goodbye, to you John, our family will remember you as the best neighbor anyone could ever dream of having. Your warmth and kindness will have a lasting impact on us. We will miss your laughter and your humor, especially finding us in the winter while shoveling the snow piling in our driveways. We’ll miss your smiles as we’d meet and see you already in your garden, eager to let us know what’s new or what plants the new season would bring about. You will forever be in our hearts, rest in peace John your legacy lives on.

I met John over 30 years ago at New York Life, 2 young guys with young families and we hit it off right away. We would make time everyday at work to catch up and make each other laugh. We then worked together for almost 20 years at BNY and always made sure to chat daily whether in my office or his, the stories are endless but were always centered around our love of our families and our love of giving everyone we crossed paths with a nickname. I came in a distant second to John every time but the laughs we had were endless. As life happens and we both left BNY our catchups became less frequent but always cherished. I would study for 2 days in anticipation of our upcoming text or phone call as i knew the 1st 10 minutes were a rigorous competition of recalling the nicknames we dubbed people over the past 30 years and again I would lose every time. You always put a smile on my face. We always said we would meet at Vitales for the full sub one last time but time ran out on us. As we all have great memories of a great man whose time with us was way too short, I will never forget the love in his eyes when he spoke about Darlene,Mike and Sean. God Bless and RIP my friend.

There are so many things I want to say but I don’t know where to begin. I suppose first off, John, thank you for giving me a shot back in 1999 when you interviewed me. Thank you for giving “the kid from south Jersey” a chance. I still laugh that you considered everything below West Orange to be “south Jersey.” Second, it’s those comments and memories that are sticking with me. I’ll never forget you saying, when you helped move me into my house and you were driving past the sod farms of “central” Jersey, “all this open space is freaking me out man.” I’m laughing out loud as I write this. Or as we waited for pricing files to come in when we worked at the bank, you would yell “refresh” in hopes they would arrive so we could get to the Path Train, or as you called it, “the bucket of bolts” and head home.
To Darlene, Michael, and Sean, you lost a great one. John will be sorely missed but never forgotten. And John, if you’re reading this, I still refer to my man cave as the “The Madden/Potter Wing” of my home. LGR.
May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. May the rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

May the one who created the universe and all things bless all who mourn. John was one in a million and had the kindest and most genuine spirit. He was a wonderful manager and colleague and had the patience of a saint. I was so grateful to know him and to work with him—he was the real deal. In the tank of piranhas of the old bank, Johnny was a shark slow to anger. It’s just unthinkable that he isn’t still roaming about making things good for everyone and waiting for a beer at day’s end. He probably still is, we just may not see him as easily, but he’s surely right there if we close our eyes and remember that voice. Those of us who heard him on calls for hours on end will never forget—He was just the best.
