I offer my deepest condolences to the entire Spina family. I am deeply saddened by your loss. Sam was a wonderful and dynamic person. I enjoyed campaigning and supporting Sam over the years. He was a kind and caring man that will be missed by everyone.
My daughter, Liz Portuese-Banka will never forget how Sam was willing and able to marry her and her husband in a civil ceremony. The restaurant was quite a distance from West Orange and it was an unusually hot and humid June day. However, Sam was his usual kind and caring self who performed the ceremony on that humid day with a personal and eloquent manner.
I am honored to have known such a wonderful man.

Sam was a great personal friend and a wonderful supporter of the West Orange Public Library. Through his commitment the library grew and flourished and his appreciation of the institution made my work so much easier and made me feel like a valued member of the Township "family". His love and enthusiasm was catching and made every day of my working life a pleasure.
Rest easy, my friend -- you did a great job!
My sincere condolences to the family,
Caren Brown, retired Director of the West Orange Public Library, 1989 - 1997.

I'm so sorry to hear of his loss. For all of my childhood, Mayor Spina has been in office. Mayor Spina was like no other and even today I compare other Mayors to him. Every time you saw Mayor Spina, he greeted you, not as a politician, but as a genuine person. My most favorite memories of all time was every Christmas. I loved seeing him in his Santa suit and giving out candy. The whole town was there. Being there made me feel like the whole town was family. My prayers go out to the Spina family and also to my fellow West Orange family. Mayor Spina we will never ever be forgotten.

I have had the honor of knowing Sam, my entire life. From planting trees with him on Arbor Day at Hazel Ave Elementry School as a student during his years as Mayor, to the past 10 years as a Volunteer at the West Orange First Aid Squad. Truly, a huge loss for not only the West Orange community, but the entire world. Truly, a generous, unselfish, and lifelong dedicated public servant. My deepest condolences to the entire family, May God see you all through this difficult time. Thank you for your service to our country, and community, Sam. Rest easy now, until we meet again. Rest In Peace.

As mayor from the time I was in kindergarten until long after I graduated from WOHS, Sam Spina was an ever-present role model to the people of West Orange. School functions, tree lightings, parades and other events were always an opportunity to see him connect with the people in town. For me, Mr. Spina epitomized local public service. my condolences to his family and all the residents of West Orange.

My family and I send our deepest condolences. Mayor Spina visited my daughters class in Redwood School. A few weeks later Lauren saw the mayor in Burger King, and was so excited to see him! A few months ago I saw the Mayor in Shop Rite and told him that he has my vote if he decides to run again. We had a nice laugh. Mayor Spina understood that the role of government and the mayoralty was not to expand ones personal power but to help the people of the town live better lives. He succeeded in making West Orange a safe, affordable, enjoyable place to live for the people in town. He, and his brand of governing, will be sorely missed.
