Obituary of Robert Joseph Coen
Robert J. Coen, 93, of West Orange died on Saturday, November. 18, 2016, at home.
Funeral Mass will be said on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016 at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Orange NJ at 11 a.m. Interment will be private. Visiting will be on Tuesday Dec 27 from 4 to 7 p.m.at The Dangler Funeral Home of West Orange, 340 Main St., West Orange. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of the Valley Church, 510 Valley St., Orange, N.J. 07050.
Bob was born in Orange NJ and lived his entire life in West Orange. He was an Economist and Director of Research at Universal McCann. Upon graduation from West Orange High School, Bob enlisted in the Navy to join the WWII war effort, serving as a radio operator in the south pacific. Following service, he completed a BS in Mathematics from Holy Cross and an MS in Mathematics from Columbia University. He joined McCann-Erickson in 1948, where he rose to become the eminent forecaster of advertising spending in the world. His twice yearly "Insiders Report" was a media event covered by many news outlets and his data was used by numerous government and business organizations. Bob and his wife, Wanda traveled extensively to conferences where he presented his work and then explored much of Europe, Asia and the Americas. He continued at UM until the end of 2015, riding the train into Manhattan every day well into his 92nd year. He was with McCann for more than 67 years. In addition to travel, Bob was a lover of books, food, business newscasts, swimming, golf, action & thriller films, corny jokes & NY Yankees. Long standing active member of Our Lady of the Valley parish in Orange NJ. Generous supporter of numerous charitable organizations.
Bob was the beloved husband of the late Wanda G. Coen. Devoted father of Lisa, Robert Jr. and the late Theodore Coen. He was predeceased by his parents John and Mary (Whitford), his brothers and sisters John, Mary Unruh, Peggy Holleuffer, Joan Desideri (D'Auria), Bill, and Ted. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.
