Paul was born in Montclair, NJ and lived most of his life in West Orange. He worked for many years at the Essex County Correction Center in North Caldwell, retiring with the rank of Captain. Paul was always fair and kind to both his coworkers and those who were housed there.
Paul was the loving youngest son of the late Joe and Kitty Coen. He is survived by his sister Joan C. Spina of West Orange. Paul is predeceased by his beloved wife Eileen (Burke), who passed away after 4 months of marriage. Also predeceased by his brother Joseph of Cedar Grove, Bobby of Iselin, and sister Patricia (Mueller) of Pepperell, Massachusetts. He is survived by 24 nieces and nephews and 25 great nieces and nephews.
Paul served honorably with the U.S. National Guard. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and the O'Hara Association. After retiring from the Correction Center, Paul moved to Forked River, where he realized his dream by the water.
Paul lived a quiet and unassuming life by the water. He lived life to the fullest when he was fishing on his boat the ECHO, out on his beloved Barnegat Bay. Always at his side were his faithful English Setter companions, Sparky, Lacey, Cricket and Cinders. Paul knew everything there was to know about fishing and boats, and shared that knowledge with those around him.
The Family wishes to thank all of those who cared for Paul during his last weeks on earth, with a special thanks to Joe O'Hara, a childhood friend who stood by Paul to the end.
Paul loved God, his family and country. He was a very spiritual person, who attended mass daily. Paul was known for his dry wit, his sense of humor, and loyalty to his friends. Paul loved his "Irish", and loved his lifetime buddies and friends. He will be sorely missed.
